Soul Force Project, the Pasadena Chapter of the United Nations Association, and Plant Based Treaty are co-hosting their annual Earth Day Altadena event on Saturday, April 12, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the beautiful private garden of the historic Solvang House at 280 Crosby, West Altadena.
By News Desk
Soul Force is an Altadena-based nonprofit that uses art and music to promote nonviolent change, social and environmental justice. This year’s event will feature live world music performances from local Altadena artists, including Baba Onochie Chukwarah, along with a diverse lineup of local and guest musicians, such as jazz vocalist Dwight Trible and others. The United Nations Association (UNA) works to support the mission of the UN and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through local action.
Plant Based Treaty will provide delicious vegan food, and Dena United Coalition of Altadena will showcase legacy organizations and businesses from the community. Local arts organizations will offer creative activities for families. Our host venue, Solvang, is an elegant ranch home built in 1915, surrounded by extraordinary gardens. It stands as a symbol of resilience in a community that was devastated by the Eaton Fire. Thankfully, the ranch was spared and continues to serve as a beacon of hope for Altadena’s rebuilding efforts.
Local business owner John Hopkins will be honored for his decades of social justice activism and his commitment to serving healthy, vegan food through his beloved store and community hub, Oh Happy Days. Tragically, the store was destroyed in the fire, along with Rhythms of the Village on North Lake.
Artist and educator Leigh Adams, an eco-sensitive designer and horticultural interpreter at the L.A. County Arboretum/Botanic Gardens, will deliver the keynote address. Adams is recognized for her pioneering work in regenerative gardening practices, earning accolades from various area agencies, including the City and County of Los Angeles. Heavenly Hughes from My Tribe Rise will also offer an inspiring message of encouragement.
This family-friendly, zero waste, vegan-only, outdoor event is part of Los Angeles Climate Week. Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles. Donations will be accepted to support local Altadena artists. The suggested donation is $20 (or $10 for UNA Pasadena members), and residents affected by the fire are invited to attend at no cost. Everyone is welcome.
