The South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD) Board of Education has announced the selection of Dr. Angela Elizondo Baxter as the district’s next superintendent. Her appointment will be officially voted on at the May 13, 2025, school board meeting, with her service beginning July 1, 2025, following the retirement of current superintendent Dr. Geoff Yantz.

Dr. Baxter was selected after an intensive 10-week recruitment process that included input from staff, families, and community stakeholders. More than 30 candidates were considered for the role. Currently serving as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services at Culver City Unified School District, Dr. Baxter is widely respected for her leadership in innovative instruction, equity-driven policies, and community engagement.
Her past roles include International Baccalaureate Principal, Professional Development Coordinator, County Office Content Specialist, and award-winning elementary school teacher. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from USC, a Master’s Degree in Education from Texas State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
“I am honored to lead South Pasadena Unified School District,” Dr. Baxter said. “Together, we will continue to prioritize student safety and wellness, foster an inclusive culture, and promote innovative solutions that ensure excellence for all our students.”
Karen Tamis, President of the SPUSD Board of Education, noted that Dr. Baxter “greatly impressed us with her knowledge, expertise, and her advocacy for all children,” and expressed confidence that she will “swiftly build respect and trust with our learning community.”
A community reception will be held before the end of the school year to welcome Dr. Baxter. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks.
