In a move that seems designed to cripple the federal government’s ability to address climate change, the T’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has decided to shut down critical research and revoke the foundation for all federal actions aimed at combating greenhouse gas emissions.

      By John Boucher

During a visit to a truck manufacturing plant, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency under the T. administration revealed plans to ease vehicle emissions standards. The move was justified by claiming that the EPA lacked the legal authority to enforce stricter regulations.

A Betrayal of Science and Future Generations

This isn’t just a slap in the face to science and reason; it’s a betrayal of every American who believes in safeguarding our future from the intensifying impacts of climate change.

The EPA’s decision to rescind the scientific determination underpinning the U.S. government’s authority to fight climate change is nothing short of an environmental catastrophe. Andrew Wheeler, the agency’s administrator, absurdly called it the “largest deregulatory action in American history,” a description that would be more accurate if framed as the largest abdication of responsibility.

The Largest Abdication of Responsibility in American History

In one fell swoop, the administration is laying the groundwork for a world where the U.S. rejects the climate crisis, while the planet’s temperature continues to rise and environmental disasters rage. This is a devastating blow for anyone watching the accelerating climate emergency. The science is clear: greenhouse gas emissions are causing global temperatures to rise, exacerbating natural disasters. This isn’t a theory, it’s well-documented reality. Yet, here we are, as this administration dismantle the scientific consensus that has underpinned environmental policies for decades.

The Immediate Threat of Climate Denial

What’s even more infuriating is that this move isn’t just political theater, it’s putting real people in danger. The administration has already undermined federal disaster response programs, leaving communities vulnerable in the wake of hurricanes, wildfires, and floods. This latest decision further weakens the government’s ability to protect the public from the growing tide of climate-induced disasters. It’s as if the administration is not just ignoring the crisis but actively pretending it’s a distant, theoretical issue, rather than an immediate, devastating threat.

Rolling Out the Red Carpet for Polluters

By withdrawing the scientific foundation that grants the government legal authority to regulate greenhouse gases, the EPA is giving polluters a free pass. Instead of mitigating climate change and protecting future generations, the administration is paving the way for industries to profit from environmental destruction. This is reckless and shortsighted.

The Consequences of Climate Inaction Are Already Here

The consequences of this climate denial are already evident. Wildfires have ravaged California and the Pacific Northwest; hurricanes have flooded the Gulf Coast; rising sea levels threaten coastal communities. These disasters are being made worse by climate change, yet the President continues to cater to the fossil fuel industry, disregarding the science. The administration’s incompetence in disaster response, highlighted by its botched handling of Hurricane Maria, further demonstrates its inability to address the crisis.

T’s Loyalty to Fossil Fuels Over People

This isn’t just about ignoring science; it’s about ideology and loyalty to special interests. By revoking the scientific basis for climate action, the administration is siding with big oil, coal, and gas, while jeopardizing the health and safety of Americans. This isn’t about economic growth; it’s about protecting the fossil fuel industry at the expense of future generations.

A Reckless Disregard for the Science of Climate Change

If the EPA succeeds in its efforts, the ability to tackle climate change will be severely weakened, with potentially catastrophic long-term effects. From deadly heatwaves to stronger hurricanes, from crop failures to mass displacement, we are facing an existential crisis that demands immediate action, not denial.

The Urgent Need for Bold Leadership

In the face of this betrayal, it’s crucial that we hold our leaders accountable. Americans deserve better than an administration that prioritizes corporate profits over people’s lives and  that refuses to acknowledge the severity of the climate crisis. We need leaders who will embrace the science and take decisive action.

      Holding Our Leaders Accountable

The administration’s decision to gut climate policy is an affront to science, public health, and future generations. It’s a devastating move that will haunt us for years to come. The clock is ticking, and the time to act is now.
