The Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy has taken an important step in urban conservation by acquiring a property in Sycamore Canyon.
By Nicolas Perez
The nonprofit purchased a 0.169-acre plot, that they have named “Sycamore East,” at a tax-default auction. Although small, this parcel holds strategic significance: it sits across Chevy Chase Drive from AFC’s existing Sycamore Canyon Preserve and borders Glendale’s Murchison Open Space Preserve. This position strengthens the bond between the two protected areas, ensuring safe wildlife maneuvering across preserves and reinforces ecological stability in the region.
The auction’s 30-day notice required quick action from the Arroyos and Foothills Conservancy. By drawing on previous donations the organization mobilized swiftly, bidding successfully against other prospective buyers to secure the property. Sycamore East may be a small preserve, but it’s crucial for maintaining the habitat corridor in the area for safe passage of animal life. Urban conservation often encounters obstacles from development pressures and limited funding. To continue preserving essential habitats, groups like AFC depend on public contributions.
