Vroman’s reports that the opening of The 1894, a new wine bar at Vroman’s Bookstore, is awaiting inspection.
By Garrett Rowlan
The first inspection is to be the water inspection, but the contracted plumber is away temporarily. That inspection is to be followed by three additional inspections. It would appear that the time frame for opening The 1894 at Vroman’s Bookstore is – euphemistically – flexible.
The name of the wine bar derives from the year that Adam Clark Vroman, a native of Illinois, founded Vroman’s. When he died, he left ownership to his long time employees; the great grandson of one of those employees is the current owner.
On a gloomy and cold December 26, 2019, the unlit wine bar looked like an empty swank movie set – a sharp contrast with the bustle of gift card redeemers in the rest of Vroman’s. Given Vroman’s position as a Pasadena institution (celebrated its 125th anniversary back in November of this year,) the community awaits the completion of inspections of The 1894 with appropriate patience.
> The 1894, is officially set to open on Monday, February 10th.
