Set against the scenic backdrop of Loma Alta Park (3330 N. Lincoln Ave, Altadena, CA 91001), this unforgettable evening allowed community members to experience the magic of Leonard Bernstein’s legendary West Side Story under the stars. The grand operatic treatment of the performance, paying tribute to Bernstein’s enduring legacy, offered a fresh and powerful perspective on the classic tale of warring gangs and forbidden love. Songs like “America,” “Somewhere,” and “I Feel Pretty” filled the air, captivating the audience with their timeless beauty.
“It was a wonderful celebration of all the people who make this community special,” said Supervisor Katheryn Barger.
The event also featured dozens of local Altadena restaurants, businesses, musicians, artisans, and nonprofits, each setting up booths offering everything from delicious food to handcrafted goods. Families spread blankets, set up lawn chairs, and enjoyed picnics, all while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of both the community celebration and the world-class performance.
The evening mirrored the spirit of West Side Story, where two individuals from rival groups find love despite the odds, a metaphor for the unity and strength seen in Altadena’s diverse, close-knit community. The event also showcased live performances by African Soul International (ASI), Darlene Green, Melodia Mariposa, and the Thurgood Marshall Secondary School Chamber Choir.
Set against the backdrop of this community celebration, the performance underscored the power of the arts to transcend barriers, heal divisions, and unite people from all walks of life.
