In a move to support communities devastated by the January wildfire disaster and to bolster the state’s preparedness for future catastrophes, the California Senate on Tuesday, June 3, passed a package of 13 bills under the Golden State Commitment initiative.

Spearheaded by Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena), the legislative package includes several key measures aimed at both immediate recovery and long-term resiliency. Among the bills authored by Pérez is SB 581, the “Fight for Firefighters Act,” which passed unanimously. The bill would transition 3,000 seasonal Cal Fire firefighters into full-time, permanent roles and ensure year-round staffing of all 356 Cal Fire engines and helicopter bases.
“I have no greater duty than to be there for my constituents as our communities recover from the Eaton Fire,” said Senator Pérez. “I am moving with great urgency and a spirit of strong bipartisanship to ease the pain and rebuild this special place we love and call home.”
Other major legislation from Pérez includes SB 547, which extends crucial protections to commercial insurance holders, particularly small businesses, affordable housing communities, and nonprofits affected by natural disasters. The bill guarantees that these groups won’t face policy cancellations or non-renewals for one year following a disaster—protections already in place for homeowners.
SB 610, another of Pérez’s bills, provides comprehensive support to homeowners, renters, and mobilehome residents impacted by disasters. The legislation mandates mortgage forbearance options, requires landlords to repair damage from smoke and ash, and protects the rights of mobilehome owners to return to their spaces once parks reopen.
“Our commitment to help our communities recover and rebuild from the January fires is unwavering,” said Pérez.
Beyond the Golden State Commitment package, Senator Pérez is also advancing additional fire-related legislation. SB 256 seeks to improve wildfire mitigation through stronger utility planning, undergrounding of power lines, and enhanced coordination with emergency responders. Meanwhile, SB 293, the Generational Homeownership Protection Act, aims to safeguard property ownership for families affected by disaster, offering relief from penalties and unexpected tax burdens due to property reassessments.
