California voters delivered a sharp rebuke to Donald Trump on Tuesday by approving Proposition 50, a sweeping redistricting measure that marks a major Democratic win in the 2025 off-year elections. Los Angeles County reported 73% in favor (as of publishing).

The initiative redraws congressional boundaries in the nation’s largest state, strengthening Democratic influence and countering several GOP-leaning districts created earlier this year in Texas at Trump’s urging. With its passage, California joins a growing number of blue states pushing back against Republican-led redistricting efforts nationwide.
Prop 50’s approval is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping control of the U.S. House during the final two years of Trump’s second term. Democrats hailed the outcome as a “reassertion of fairness,” while Republicans condemned it as a partisan power grab that undermines independent district mapping.
