California State Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) has issued a statement following Cal Poly Pomona’s decision to postpone an on-campus career fair event that originally planned to host U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recruiters.

The event sparked concern among students and community members, prompting multiple reports to Senator Pérez’s office. In response, her office contacted the California State University (CSU) system for clarification. Administrators later confirmed that the event would be postponed.
“I understand the community’s outrage about ICE being allowed on campus for a career fair,” Senator Pérez said in her statement. “ICE should have no place on our campuses, and certainly should not be given space to recruit people to join their cruel, terror squad.”
As Chair of the Senate Education Committee, Senator Pérez emphasized the importance of student safety and inclusivity in higher education environments. She highlighted her ongoing legislative efforts, including Senate Bill 98, the SAFE Act, which aims to require notification to campus communities when immigration enforcement authorities are present.
“Ensuring all students feel safe on college and university campuses is a priority to me,” she said. “This is why I’ve authored SB 98, the SAFE Act, in partnership with student leaders.”
The postponement of the event comes amid broader debates over the presence of federal immigration agencies in academic spaces and the impact on undocumented and immigrant students.
