Orange peels, an oft discarded part of the orange, are teeming with nutrients and health benefits that can contribute to an individual’s overall wellness.

      By Nicolas Perez

These peels are abundant in vitamins and active compounds that support various bodily functions.

      • The dietary fiber found in orange peels promotes digestive health by ensuring regular bowel movements and maintaining a balanced microbiome in the gut.
      • Orange peel is also a great source of Vitamin C, which fortifies the immune system and aids in the body’s defense against illnesses.
      • Moreover, orange peels are packed with antioxidants, substances that protect the body from free radicals, which cause cellular damage and accelerate the aging process. The antioxidants present in orange peels also help combat inflammation, supporting cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol.
      • Research indicates that the compounds in orange peels can offer protective benefits against cancer in the skin, lungs, and colon.
      • The natural oils contained within the peels possess antimicrobial properties, making them effective in inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria.
      • In addition to their internal health benefits, orange peels can also enhance dermal health. They can be utilized in skincare routines to exfoliate and cleanse which promotes a brighter, smoother complexion.
      • The oils in the peels can help reduce the appearance of acne and eliminate dead skin cells, leaving the skin revitalized.

Even though the bitter taste of orange peels may be unappealing when consumed, they can be incorporated into the diet in more palatable forms. Utilizing them as zest in culinary dishes, in dried peel powder, in marmalade, or as extracts allows individuals to reap the health benefits of this often-overlooked component of the orange.
