In a move to counter what he called an “unprecedented assault on democracy,” California Governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to launch new redistricting efforts aimed at offsetting Republican-drawn congressional maps that have eliminated Democratic seats in states like Texas.

The announcement comes amid growing concern among Democrats over what they describe as coordinated attempts by former President Donald T. and his allies to manipulate the 2026 midterm elections through aggressive gerrymandering.
In support of Newsom’s initiative, the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Rising & Empowering Political Action Committee (ASPIRE PAC) released a joint statement from Chair Marilyn Strickland and Chair Emerita Grace Meng.
“When Republicans can’t win on ideas, they cheat by rigging elections,” the statement read. “The Big Ugly Law is deeply unpopular, millions of Americans are losing health care, and millions more face an uncertain economic future. It’s why Republicans are desperately trying to silence the voices of communities across America. They are lawless and out of control.”
ASPIRE PAC warned that the GOP’s redistricting efforts, characterized as a “brazen power grab”, could ultimately backfire. “President T. and Republicans are playing a dangerous game,” the statement continued. “Democrats will fight fire with fire and do whatever it takes to win back the majority in 2026. There is too much at stake.”
The group also praised Newsom’s leadership and commended top California Democrats, including Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, State Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire, and the state’s Democratic congressional delegation, for “refusing to back down.”
Newsom’s move sets the stage for what is likely to become a high-stakes, contentious battle over congressional maps, and control of the U.S. House, in the 2026 midterms.
