Pasadena’s signature cultural event, featuring 18-25 arts and culture venues providing free entry and programming, returns on October 10.

      By News Desk

Jennifer Paige, Director of the Planning & Community Development Department, and staff welcome two new ArtNight Partner organizations: Discover the mysterious “Mushroom Boat’s” journey made by artist Sam Shoemaker across the Catalina channel at Fulcrum Arts, while Pasadena Heritage presents a Batchelder tile exhibition.

Chill this Fall with “LUCID: Real or Unreal?,” Light Bringer Project’s interactive outdoor art installation that features artistic dreams and nightmares; delight in haunted literary tales at Red Hen Press; and creep into the mood with seasonal art activities and Bob Baker’s Marionette’s spooky puppet show at City Hall.

The theme continues at Art Center College of Design’s “Mathew Rolston, Vanitas: The Palermo Portraits,” a photo exhibition of images from the Capuchin catacombs (at the Mullin Transportation Design Center). Other exhibitions include “Diana Thater: Peonies,” a video work exploring the relationship between the natural and man-made worlds and a pair of “Cruising J-Town” exhibitions focusing on Southern California’s love affair with the automobile through the lens of the Japanese American community and featuring cars designed by Japanese American alumni. The HMCT Gallery presents: “Primarium: A Case for Cursive,” which examines writing instruction across 40 countries. And finally, the Williamson Gallery offers a mediation on the ocean by artists Patty Chang and David Kelley along with undergraduate student work.

Explore 1,300 years of cultural exchange on the Silk Road at the USC Pacific Asia Museum’s Crossroads Gallery and enjoy live painting with artist Riea Owens along with the work of artist Bernard Stanley Hoyes at Alkebu-lan Cultural Center. Pasadena City College presents a solo exhibition by Joel Otterson whose sculptures examine intersections among domestic, functional and decorative objects over 30 years.

Sing-along and request your favorite show tunes at the Pasadena Playhouse’s pop-up Piano Bar in the courtyard. Experience live music at several venues, including classical, multicultural, and interactive performances at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music; kinetic music and dance with the Pennington Dance Group at A Room to Create; and at Boston Court Pasadena, which also presents an art exhibition and a special sneak peek of the set for Tennessee William’s “The Night of the Iguana.”

Participate in art making at Remainders Creative Reuse for all-age crafts and gallery exhibition and visit Artworks Teen Center’s interactive family crafts screen-printing workshops. The Armory Center for the Arts invites you to join in making art and viewing two gallery exhibitions.

The City’s Arts and Culture Commission funds Mini grants to allow small arts groups and individual artists to participate. Each venue has a Braille version of the ArtNight brochure and many venues, including City Hall, will have food trucks on site.
