The Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy has recently acquired a new piece of land that will serve as a vital passageway for wildlife in Glendale.
By Claire Ghantous
This new passageway will be known as the Sunshine Preserve. Its direct location is north of Glendale, and south of the San Gabriel Mountains. It will allow safe passage for local wildlife to travel between the Verdugo Mountains and the San Rafael Hills. In fact, a mountain lion, Nikita, has already been tracked across this new preserve! Additionally, Sunshine Preserve allows for the wildlife to roam freely across the land and hillsides.
Along with allowing the habitat to grow for the wildlife, Sunshine may support some pollinators. The AFC’s goal is to bring back the native plants and animals’ habitat. The AFC is looking for areas in Sunshine to create pollinator gardens and plant narrow leaf milkweed, which is native to California. Many pollinators, especially monarch butterflies, are close to extinction in the area, so these milkweed plants are extremely beneficial. Because the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy works to preserve wildlife and their lands, the Sunshine Preserve is the perfect new land addition for them.
This preserve will not only improve safe passageway, but it will help to restore the habitat to keep the wildlife safe and happy.
