The Altadena Historical Society (AHS) announced its upcoming Juneteenth celebration and scholarship awards ceremony, set to take place at Loma Alta Park in Altadena on June 19, 2025, at noon.

This year’s event will highlight the significance of Juneteenth, honor local heroes, and celebrate the resilience of the Altadena community, with special emphasis on those impacted by the Eaton fire.
The annual celebration will feature a luncheon, an inspiring photo exhibit by local photographer Alfred Haymond, and a short program focused on the historical importance of Juneteenth. The program will also spotlight the incredible life and legacy of Ellen Garrison Clark, a 19th-century civil rights activist whose contributions continue to resonate with the African-American community in Altadena and beyond.
A special preview of oral recordings documenting the experiences of Altadena residents affected by the Eaton fire will offer attendees a rare and personal look into the community’s resilience. These oral histories, soon to be archived at the Altadena Historical Society, will provide future generations with invaluable insight into the local African-American community’s struggles and triumphs.
“The resilience and strength of Altadena’s residents, particularly our African-American community, are the heart of this celebration,” said Veronica Jones, President of the Altadena Historical Society. “Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our history, and we’re honored to continue the tradition of supporting our local students while celebrating the rich legacy of those who have paved the way for future generations.”
In keeping with its commitment to fostering education and community growth, AHS will present four scholarships to graduating seniors from John Muir High School who have been affected by the Eaton fire. The scholarships, made possible by the Ellen Garrison Clark Fund, are part of an ongoing initiative launched in 2021 and are supported by the generosity of local businesses and community members.
The Juneteenth event also underscores the importance of education and giving back to the community, as the scholarship program helps provide young people with opportunities to further their studies and make a positive impact in their communities.
