Users on the Altadena Girls Instagram page are welcomed by a very important message, “Restoring normalcy for the teenage victims of the Eaton Canyon Fire.”
By Christian Brewster
What started as a donation drive quickly turned into a movement led by eighth grader, Avery Colvert. The account started gaining traction when it received attention from celebrities like Charli XCX and Paris Hilton, encouraging Avery and her fellow volunteers to keep aiding those affected by the Eaton Fire.
Clothing, personal hygiene products, beauty products, etc., were all secured for girls who lost everything in the fires. Prior to their Thursday, January 30, announcement, Altadena Girls didn’t have a permanent location for a base of operations. After the statement on Instagram, however, Avery’s small movement became a pillar of hope that will be here long after the fires are extinguished.
“We’re so excited to announce our permanent home in Old Pasadena,” the post said. “Altadena Girls isn’t just about replacing what was lost; it’s about creating a bigger, bolder, brighter future for our girls.”
Event spaces, music rooms, quiet homework rooms, dance classes, and mental health services all will be provided at the Old Pasadena location very soon.
With the success of Altadena Girls, another Instagram account was created with the same mission: Altadena Boys. Accepting monetary donations, clothing, personal care items, electronics, sports equipment, etc., Altadena Boys aims to “offer experiences like sports camps, STEM workshops, and mental health and wellness sessions.”
The boys garnered the attention of Blink-182 drummer, Travis Barker, as well as Altadena Girls, who have shown support on their Instagram account.
Altadena Girls and Altadena Boys have new updates every day about how to help those in need. Their Instagram pages are linked above.
