Excitement is building in Altadena as the community prepares to welcome back the Bob Lucas Memorial Branch Library, located at 2659 Lincoln Ave. The library is nearing the completion of a major renovation and expansion, and the Altadena Library District is inviting everyone to save the date: Saturday, August 16, 2025, for a grand reopening celebration.

      By Rena Kurlander

A cornerstone of West Altadena for decades, the Bob Lucas Library has long served as more than just a place to check out books. Named in honor of local resident and passionate literacy advocate Robert “Bob” Lucas, the library stands as a symbol of the power of reading and its potential to transform lives.

Back in 1971, Lucas recognized the need for accessible educational resources in West Altadena, especially for youth and those unable to travel to the main branch. His efforts were instrumental in reopening the original site at Ventura Street and Lincoln Avenue, grounded in his belief that “personal freedom could be achieved through reading.” His legacy lives on through the library that bears his name, a place committed not only to lending books but to strengthening literacy and lifelong learning throughout the community.

The Bob Lucas Memorial Library & Literacy Center temporarily closed its doors on April 10, 2024, to begin a comprehensive renovation project led by the Altadena Library District. Now, with the transformation nearly complete, the revitalized space is poised to better serve the needs of current and future generations.

While details of the celebration are still forthcoming, community members can expect a day filled with festivities, family-friendly activities, and a first look at the upgraded facilities. The newly expanded space promises improved access, modern amenities, and a renewed focus on inclusive literacy programming, ensuring that Bob Lucas’s mission continues to thrive.

For many in Altadena, especially in the wake of the devastating Eaton Fire, the return of the Bob Lucas Library marks not just a reopening, but a reaffirmation of the community’s shared commitment to knowledge, equity, and collective growth.

“Bob Lucas believed in the power of the written word to change lives,” said Nikki Winslow, Altadena Library District Director. “This reopening is not just about a building, it’s about honoring that belief and continuing to provide our community with the services, spaces and resources they need to achieve their dreams.”

Mark your calendar: Saturday, August 16, 2025. The story of literacy and opportunity in Altadena is turning a new page, and everyone’s invited to be part of the next chapter.
