Bob Lucas
Bob Lucas understood the influence and power of the written word. Over the course of his long career, he worked as a journalist, photographer, producer and editor for newspapers, magazines, radio and television. He also authored “Black Gladiator,” a biography of American boxer Jack Johnson. A local resident since 1971, he served as president of the Board of Trustees for the library district and strongly advocated for the branch library on the west side of Altadena. He believed reading was the door to the world and the road to personal freedom.
Memorial Library & Literacy Center
The Bob Lucas Memorial Library & Literacy Center reopened its doors in October 1991 after 13-year hiatus due to budget cuts resulting from Proposition 13. Originally known as the Arroyo Seco Branch of the Altadena Library District, it was renamed the Bob Lucas branch in honor of devoted community member and Library Board of Trustee Robert “Bob” Lucas who worked tirelessly to restore library services to Altadena’s west side. The Bob Lucas branch is home to its long-running adult literacy program that has served the community since 1988. It also offers regular youth and family programming and features a demonstration garden designed as an educational space and model for the use of native plants in water-efficient landscapes.
