With the Fourth of July just around the corner, Pasadena is ramping up enforcement to keep residents safe from the dangers of illegal fireworks.
By News Desk
According to recent statistics, fireworks remain one of the most hazardous consumer products, causing fires, injuries, and even fatalities each year. In response, the City of Pasadena has issued a stern warning about the strict enforcement of its fireworks policies, which hold property owners and tenants accountable for the possession, sale, and use of fireworks.
Pasadena’s municipal code imposes severe penalties for violations. Offenders could face up to one year in county jail, fines reaching $50,000, and even vehicle impoundments. The City also requires individuals caught with fireworks to pay for the disposal costs of any confiscated items.
Even “Safe and Sane” Fireworks Can Be Deadly
While many people believe sparklers are safe, they are far more dangerous than most realize. Hand-held sparklers can reach a scorching 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, posing serious burn risks and fire hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that a significant number of fireworks-related injuries involve so-called “safe and sane” fireworks, which are illegal in Pasadena.
Pasadena’s Fire Chief Chad Augustin and Police Chief Gene Harris are urging residents to exercise caution and follow safety protocols this Independence Day. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday, but we ask that it be done responsibly and safely,” Chief Augustin said. “The safety of our community—our children, our homes, and our property—is our top priority.”
Special Enforcement Measures for the Holiday
To combat the illegal use of fireworks, Pasadena police and firefighters will be on heightened alert in the days leading up to and during the Fourth of July holiday. Special enforcement patrols will be conducted to identify and seize illegal fireworks. In addition, parking enforcement officers will be out in full force to impound vehicles illegally parked in Pasadena’s hillside areas on July 4, as these areas are especially vulnerable to wildfire risks.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities, including fireworks, by calling the Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241. The City’s Service Center mobile app, available for download on both Google Play and the App Store, also allows residents to report illegal fireworks discreetly.
