In response to the school shooting on September 4 at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, teachers, students and community leaders in Alhambra will host a rally in solidarity with the community in Winder.

The rally will call on elected officials to work towards ending gun violence in schools. The rally will take place on Thursday, September 12 from 4:00 – 5:30 pm on the corner of Garfield Avenue and Main Street, in Alhambra.
Council member, Adele Andrade Stadler said:
We are all responsible to make sure our communities are safe for our families. Only the federal government can create bipartisan policy to ban assault weapons, high-capacity arsenal, and more. No student should be afraid to go to school, and teachers and staff have a fundamental right to a safe work environment.”
Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for young people, both children and teens, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In fact, since the mass shooting at Columbine High School in 1999, more 338,000 school children have experienced gun violence. In 2018, in response to the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida local students from Alhambra High School wrote a gun control law that was sponsored by Congresswoman Judy Chu and introduced as House Resolution 1076. Their teacher, Jose Sanchez said, “It is a tragedy in America where the leading cause of death for young people is gun violence. Schools are supposed to be safe spaces for students and teachers, but today they are becoming killing grounds due to gun violence.” Mr. Sanchez was Mayor when the City of Monterey Park suffered a mass shooting at the local Star Dance Studio.
Bring your own signs, a few will be available. Open to all parents, students, teachers, and community members throughout the San Gabriel Valley.
