An Alhambra Police Department K9 unit was struck by a vehicle while officers were conducting an unrelated investigation on Fremont Avenue, authorities said.

According to police, the incident occurred when a vehicle traveling northbound on Fremont Avenue collided with a marked K9 unit that had a police dog inside. The driver attempted to flee the scene, but was unable to do so due to damage sustained by the vehicle.
Officers arrested the driver, identified as Anthony Ruiz of Alhambra, on charges of hit-and-run and driving under the influence. During the investigation, Ruiz told officers he had been drinking at a bar in Los Angeles. Police also discovered that he had outstanding warrants related to prior DUI offenses.
The department confirmed that the K9, Doggo, was not injured in the collision and was reported to be in good spirits following the incident.
In a statement, the Alhambra Police Department reminded the public to take personal responsibility during the holiday season by planning for a safe ride home before celebrations begin. Police encourage the use of ride services, public transportation such as taxis, buses, or trains, or calling a sober friend.
Authorities also urged community members to report suspected impaired driving by calling 9-1-1 immediately.
