The City of Alhambra celebrated a major milestone on Monday, October 20, with the groundbreaking ceremony for the highly anticipated Alhambra Community Center. The event took place at the project site, 612 W. Shorb St., marking the beginning of a transformative development set to benefit residents for years to come.

This ambitious $25 million project is funded through state support secured by Senator Susan Rubio and Assemblymember Mike Fong, highlighting strong legislative commitment to community development in Alhambra.
“Thanks to strong support at the state level, we’re turning an underutilized space into something truly meaningful,” said Mayor Katherine Lee at the ceremony. “We’re creating a Community Center where residents of all ages can connect, learn and thrive.”
The new 17,000-square-foot facility will be a vibrant hub for social, educational, and recreational programs serving all age groups. Planned features include:
- Leisure classes for seniors, adults, teens, and children
- Meeting and conference rooms
- Multipurpose spaces for fitness, arts, and enrichment activities
- An Emergency Operations Center
- Programmable outdoor space
- A rentable rooftop terrace offering scenic views of the San Gabriel Mountains
- A special event area with a pre-function courtyard and caterer’s kitchen
Construction is expected to begin later this fall, with the completion date yet to be determined. The new center promises to be a cornerstone for community engagement and resilience in Alhambra.
