Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.

Amidst all the texting and selfies surrounding us in the world, how can we break the barrier and make a friend, or two, at a new job, school or a city?

Here are 5 recommended ways to make friends.
1. Compliment a random person.
If the girl in front of you at Starbucks is carrying a bag you love, tell her that! Small talk can lead to deeper conversations, which can lead to friendships.
2. Join a group or sign up for a class.
Joining something is a great way to socialize with people who share common interests.
3. Have friends introduce you to their friends.
Your friends will likely be more compatible (since they are your friend’s friends).
4. View acquaintances as potential friends.
Maybe you occasionally talk to someone from work or class. If he or she seems like friend material, invite that person out, and see where it goes.
5. Ask for help!
Whether it’s asking for referrals from your alumni association or inquiring a classmate to clarify lecture notes, reaching out is a gateway to closer relationships.
! Remember, it comes down to putting yourself out there and taking risks. Sometimes it will work out, and other times, it won’t—don’t take anything personally!
