Michele L. Harvey
still in the harbor
she raises her lamp…
the faded photo
of my grandparents
clutching bags full of dreams
Michele L. Harvey is an artist, poet, and photographer, spending half her time in upstate NY and the other in Brooklyn. It’s said at least 40 percent of all Americans have at least one ancestor arrive through Ellis Island, in New York City’s harbor. Michele counts herself as one of that forty percent. She moved to New York some forty years ago, and met her husband in an art class. Together, they often share a picnic supper by the harbor, look across to the Statue Of Liberty, and think of family that passed by it on the way to their dreams.

Stephen Colgan
this rocky beach
my father used to walk
watching the sea-
as if to descry the day
his life went adrift
Stephen Colgan is a poet and photographer who grew up in the city by the Atlantic Ocean, and now lives in a city by the Pacific Ocean. His photo is of the beach at Asilomar, Califonia, where he thinks back to his father’s walks on Long Island beaches.

Josie Hibbing
the sound of the waves
crested with sunlight…
drifting in the breeze
a karaoke song
my father loved to sing
Josie Hibbing lives in Hartley, Iowa. She is a native of the Philippines. She wrote this tanka last year when she visited her village in the Philippines which is very close to the ocean. The ocean brings so many memories to her especially the ones with her father who passed away 10 years ago. Her father loved to sing!
