The yearly event is held to honor individuals and organizations making strides to realize a more sustainable, equitable, and livable San Gabriel Valley.
“I’m honored to be receiving this award from Active SGV, who’s been an incredible partner in our efforts to improve mobility and sustainability in our city,” said Pérez. “Thank you to the residents of Alhambra and my council colleagues for supporting me in my pursuit of policies that will lead to a more sustainable and safe future. I look forward to continuing my bold agenda into 2022!”
Among six other distinguished awardees, Pérez was acknowledged for her outstanding efforts in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic to champion policies that created lasting social, environmental, and economic justice for under-served communities. Some of those initiatives included her successful enactment of Hero Pay, which ensured grocery and pharmacy store workers were financially compensated for their essential service to the community, the creation of Alhambra’s first bike lane to improve pedestrian safety on Poplar Boulevard, and passing the first ‘Skip-the-Stuff’ ordinance in the San Gabriel Valley, the policy designed to reduce the amount of non-recyclable, single-use, plastic waste in the community associated with takeout food orders.
