As the statewide housing crisis continues to worsen, and Southern California residents face the threat of economic displacement, tenant’s rights advocates are declaring their support for statewide rent control reform, as well as for local rent control measures in six Southern California cities, and in unincorporated Los Angeles County.
On April 12th, Pasadena Tenants Union, members and leaders from dozens of tenant groups and community organizations*—representing various cities and communities across Los Angeles County—unite in solidarity to declare a unified coalition in the name of tenant protections.
This movement comes in the face of dramatic rent increases, and represents a resurgence of tenant activism not seen in Los Angeles since the 1970s. Against the backdrop of the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, with the steps littered with cardboard moving boxes, affected tenants will share their powerful stories, and declare their commitment to a united front against unjust rent abuses.
There will be a press conference announcing the coalition at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration with Walter Senterfitt as presenter. Senterfitt is a seasoned tenant organizer working on the efforts to have the LA County Supervisors adopt a rent control/just cause eviction ordinance that would cover the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
