Learn how writers got started, handled obstacles, and got published. This workshop will be led by Kyra Horton, a 22-year-old artist hailing from Chicago’s southside. Her artistic journey finds its essence in poetry, a medium that has captivated her since 2016. Beginning through engaging in “Louder Than A Bomb” competitions and open mics, today Kyra has graced countless stages, sharing her spoken word poetry at diverse events ranging from live concerts, to graduations and community events.

In 2021, Kyra unveiled her literary debut, Cries of a Butterfly, a collection of poetry that explores the metamorphosis of butterflies as a poignant metaphor for human evolution and growth. She took charge of every aspect, crafting the book’s editing, illustrations, and design, culminating in its independent publication.

Beyond the realms of artistry, Kyra Horton’s passion can be found in the nonprofit sector, melding art, education, and activism to champion social justice in her community and beyond. Whether her expression takes the form of writing, performing, or nonprofit work, she uses art as a form of resistance and a liberating practice.
