The 15th annual Formula E (“E” as in elastic) races were held on Thursday, August 8 on the smooth sidewalks of the ArtCenter College of Design Sculpture Garden, Hillside Campus.
By Garrett Rowlan
In this competition, teams build radio-controlled vehicles powered by energy stored in 16 feet of rubber band to race three different races: the road course with squared-off turns, the drag race and the hill climb with a sharp left turn known as the “widow maker.”
Twenty teams of students, exchange students and a few professional teams participated. The Formula E races provides corporate and student teams with valuable experience in product development, engineering, team building, fabrication, finding solutions under pressure, recovering from failure and enjoying success. The judges were from design studios, Disney and Mattel.
