[Update]: Will Twohey’s Building Be Saved?

Built in 1951, Twohey’s restaurant in Alhambra is a structural grandparent in the constant architectural tumult that is Southern California.

      By Garrett Rowlan

Yet the building’s fate hangs in the balance. The current owner wants to tear the building down and build something else. A move afoot is to make the building a historical monument (the building is located at Huntington Drive and Atlantic Boulevard).

The impetus would seem to be to make the Elvis-era construction an exemplar of post-modern architecture, a designation that has spared a few Pasadena buildings from the wrecking ball.

In a statement to the community, Alhambra Preservation Group -a group seeking preservation of historical, architectural and cultural resources in Alhambra- called for the city “to prioritize a citywide inventory of its historic resources and the adoption of a comprehensive historic preservation program in its General Plan.”

      The statement added:

We have lost so much through the decades. We can’t afford to lose anymore.

The issue will be considered Monday evening, March 4, at the Alhambra Planning Commission.

Twohey’s restaurant will be moving out of its current location mid-to-late April. The exact moving date will depend on when the construction at the new South Pasadena location is finalized.

      > Update: The Alhambra Planning Commission asked for more information about traffic impacts and whether there is any historical significance to the Twohey’s building before voting on an application to demolish it and replace it with a multi-use commercial space.

How many years has it been since Twohey’s was supposed to leave the building anyway? Will they ever really go? That’s the real headline…
Of course it’s been several years since the food quality has hit rock bottom, so I suppose I don’t care that much anymore since I’m not planning to patronize them anymore.

That building was built in 1977 or 78. It’s not the original building that was there. The original building had a small in dining area with a much larger space for a car hop section. That was a lot of fun going there on Friday or Saturday night.

That building was built in the late 1970s replacing a much smaller structure that supported a drive-in restaurant.

It may look ok in a few select shots, but that place is run down and ready for a bulldozer. Plus with the INandOut on top of you there is no parking or access in the current configuration. I had read that even though Twohey’s was supposed to close a year ago they got a lease extension and they are still planning to move to south pas location.

I thought this location was supposed to close last year? The building that’s supposed to be the new location still has a banner that says “coming this spring”, which I believe was spring of last year?
