Five years ago, we drove out to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve to see the super bloom.

As our photos attest, it was spectacular. Waves of orange blanketed the hillsides.
In 2017, 2019 and 2023, there were super blooms. There could be another one later this month as the winter has been very wet. If you haven’t seen one, it is well worth the drive out to Lancaster, even with all of your fellow flower seekers and the resulting traffic and parking challenges.
Once at the preserve, there is plenty of room on the trails to stretch your legs and take in the fields and hills of color. Before going, check the live webcam at the preserve’s website to see if the poppies have bloomed. And read all of the rules for visiting!
