‘June Gloom’ and its sibling, ‘May Gray’ are familiar names in SoCal and part of our normal, expected weather patterns.

      By Briony James

The marine layer barrels inland at night, cocooning us in foggy clouds, usually burning off by the afternoon.

This year, Mother Nature has taken to extremes. We have had multiple low pressure systems keeping us gray and shrouded for days on end, accompanied by unusual chilly breezes. These cut-off lows have hung around like unwelcome guests, bringing us a little more rain and gloom than we are used to seeing past Memorial Day. Both San Diego and Los Angeles airports reported significant increases in cloudy days this spring.

On the heels of our extremely gray, wet, cold winter, it’s no wonder we’re all wondering when Sunny SoCal will be back. Never fear. This, too, shall pass.

Forecasts indicate that by mid July we might well be missing these gothic days!
