The campaign season for the Pasadena Unified School Board officially started on July 13, 2020.

      By Laura Hackett

This was the first day to pull papers. And we are off to the races!

      District 2

Map of Pasadena School District district 2In District 2, currently Roy Boulghourjian’s seat, we have Mike Crowley, Wayne Hammack and Jennifer Hall Lee all running for the seat. There is currently no word on whether Roy Boulghourjian will run again. We reached out to him on his plans, but he has yet to respond.

Mike Crowley is a PUSD parent. He has served on School Site Council as well as chairing the School Beautification Committee. Currently, he is a volunteer for the Tournament of Roses.

Wayne Hammack is a PUSD parent and an attorney by profession. Wayne has served on the PALL-Pasadena American Little League Board and was also a PALL Coach. He was also an AYSO Coach, a cubmaster for his son’s Boy Scouts Troop, and he serves as the President of the Marshall Fundamental Athletic Boosters.

Jennifer Hall Lee is a PUSD parent and in her third term on the Altadena Town Council; she is the treasurer of the ATC, on the ATC Executive Committee and on the ATC Education Committee. Jennifer is also the Chair of the Eliot Arts Annual Fund (Eliot Arts Magnet Academy).

      District 4

Map of Pasadena School District district 4For District 4, we have Pat Cahalan, the current Board President running for reelection and Scott Harden is his contender.

Patrick Cahalan is a PUSD parent and the current Board President. He spent four years working for Loyola High School as Director of Curriculum and Technology in the 1990s. He has worked at Caltech since 2002 and is the current Manager of Technical Operations for the Computational and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) Department. Patrick has a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Loyola Marymount University. His two minor programs are in Public Policy and Organizational Science.

Scott Harden is a PUSD parent, President of his children’s PTA. He has served the community as a volunteer, neighborhood leader and organizer. In his professional life he is an Innovation strategist. Scott has a B.A. from UCLA.

      District 6

Map of Pasadena School District district 6In District 6, the current seat holder, Larry Torres has announced that he will not run again. Crystal Czubernat, Tina Wu Fredericks, Priscilla Hernandez, and Milena Albert will compete for the District 6 seat.

Crystal Czubernat is a PUSD parent, has spent nearly twenty years in education, both as a teacher and then as an administrator. She has a Bachelors in Secondary Education, Master’s in Counseling, another Masters in Curriculum and is working towards completing a PhD in Organizational Leadership.

Tina Wu Fredericks is a PUSD parent. She was a teaching assistant at Willard Elementary and a LEARNS teacher at San Rafael Elementary School. Tina holds a California Single Subject Credential and taught Math at Burbank High School and Freemont Union High School District in Northern California. In addition to being a member of Willard Annual Fund leadership team for many years, Tina has held multiple PTA Board president positions including Vice President, Treasurer and Legislative Advocate. Tina is a lead engineer at Green Dot, a global FinTech company headquartered in Pasadena. Tina has a B.A. in Math from U.C. San Diego.

      Priscilla Hernandez: Coming soon.

      Milena Albert: Coming soon.

Sign Nomination Papers for Only One Candidate

Previously, Board seats were elected at large, you could sign multiple sets of nomination papers. Now PUSD is sectioned off into trustee areas, and you can only sign nomination papers for one candidate. So, keep this in mind when you sign for a candidate.
