People living with disabilities are a population that is often overlooked in discussions of equity and diversity.
By Chasity Jennings-Nuñez
The concerns and issues around access to basic, everyday services are forgotten in an environment where able-ism is normal. People with disabilities are a large part of our society. They want to succeed in participating and contributing as residents of our community.
The San Gabriel City’s Human Equity, Access and Relations (HEAR) Commission’s purpose is to advance and advocate for equity, access, diversity, social justice, positive inter-group relations and respect for all members of the San Gabriel community.
The commission was formed in October, 2020. The HEAR commission meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month and meetings are currently still virtual. Meetings are open to the public, live streamed, and recorded, on the City of San Gabriel’s YouTube channel. Each meeting for the remainder of 2021 will include an informative, public education portion.
Guest Speaker
The guest speaker is Dani Anderson, Government Relations Manager with Southern California Edison. She previously served as Executive Director of the Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC) and has been working in the disability advocacy field for over 10 years at the State, Federal, and non-profit levels.
Ms. Anderson’s presentation will focus on community education around disability pride, the Independent Living Movement, and improving communication between individuals with and without disabilities.
This month’s HEAR Commission meeting was moved and will be held on Thursday, August 26th at 6:30 pm. Join us then to learn more.
