The board met to take several actions related to the devastating Eaton fire.
By Rena Kurlander
Four action items via four separate resolutions were presented to the board for approval.
Action items
The first authorized emergency repair work at the school sites affected by the fires without having to go through competitive bidding for the contracts for such repairs and services. This first one required the approval of 4/5 of the board. The second proclaimed an existing emergency. The third approved the designation of district representatives for interacting with the governor’s Office of Emergency Services for the purpose of obtaining federal assistance. The fourth was a commitment to rebuild Eliot Arts Magnet school.
The first three were approved, but the fourth one was voted to be tabled after discussion by the board. The board received written and oral comments supporting this action to rebuild Eliot, and also received oral comments asking that the commitment to rebuild include the campuses that had been occupied by charter schools.
Updates
The board then received updates from staff about the status in ascertaining damage and the progress in academic and operational recovery.
