UK Stroke Survivor and Illustrator Dan Makin to Visit Pasadena for Stroke Awareness Month

Pasadena will welcome UK stroke survivor and illustrator Dan Makin this May for a two‑week series of community events focused on resilience, neuro‑recovery, and the healing power of creativity. His visit coincides with Stroke Awareness Month and brings together local families, educators, and researchers for conversations about recovery and hope.

Makin is the illustrator of Danny’s Trails: Mossley, England, a children’s book written by Pasadena author Susana Porras. The book blends real landscapes with imaginative storytelling, serving not only as a children’s adventure but also as accessible reading material for individuals recovering from brain injuries.

Makin’s connection to neuro‑recovery is deeply personal. In 2017, he survived a life‑altering stroke that left him with permanent disabilities. During rehabilitation, he discovered illustration as a creative outlet that became both therapeutic and transformative. His work and advocacy earned him the Courage Award from the UK Stroke Association in 2021, recognizing his commitment to inspiring others navigating similar challenges.

During his Pasadena visit, Makin will participate in community gatherings, educational discussions, and research‑focused events. One highlight is a meet‑and‑greet benefiting the UCLA Cramer Neuro Rehabilitation Lab, which conducts innovative research on stroke recovery.
