Everyone can trot, walk, run, or skip around the 5K Rose Bowl loop on Thanksgiving morning.
By Scott Phelps
As I rode my bike one day last winter around the Rose Bowl loop, I thought we should have a PUSD fundraising walk/run/ride around this loop to benefit the PUSD athletics programs.
I reached out to some PUSD people that I knew were avid runners and/or cyclists like PUSD parent Warren Skidmore and Blair’s Maestra Veronica Yepez who has led a Students Run LA group for years, and to PUSD staff in charge of athletics (at that time Marco Villegas) and PEF’s Patrick Conyers about the idea.
Fortunately, I also reached out to another well-known exerciser, my councilperson Tyron Hampton. Tyron put me in touch with Rose Bowl General Manager Jens Weiden who had the great idea to plug PUSD in to the annual Turkey Trot started by Rose Bowl Event Production Manager Julia Goldstein in 2018. Mr. Hampton’s staffer and former PUSD parent Cushon Bell joined us on the zoom chat where we discussed the opportunity. Ms. Goldstein and PUSD and PEF staff connected and voila, PUSD became this year’s partner for this annual fun event! I would like to thank PUSD athletics administrators Marco Villegas and David Ibarra, PEF’s Patrick Conyers and staff, Mr. Hampton and Mr. Weiden and Ms. Goldstein for this wonderful opportunity to raise funds for PUSD athletics!
Here’s where we need everyone’s help. Please plan to trot, walk, run or skip around the 5K recreational loop at “America’s Stadium” on Thanksgiving morning from 9:00
am to 12:00 pm! You can work up an appetite for your Thanksgiving meal! Funds will help pay for equipment, uniforms, referees, and officials for athletic programs at four PUSD high schools – Blair, John Muir, Marshall, and PHS. The more sign ups we get, the more funds PUSD will receive!
To sign up for the 2022 Rose Bowl Turkey Trot, visit rosebowlturkeytrot.com. Tickets for any area children ages 9 and under are free. For PUSD students, the Rose Bowl Stadium is partnering with PUSD to provide our students ages 10-18 with complimentary tickets.
