The Chola Hostest With the Mostest: Kay Sedia

Latina Drag Queen hosts Tupperware “Fiesta” in Alhambra.

      By Ari Gutierrez Arambula

Remember Tupperware? That multifunctional space-age kitchen food storage marvel from the previous century? It’s celebrating its 77th year in 2023!

Its tried-and-true direct marketing method of holding house parties is still in place. This is where the host invites a circle of friends to enjoy some nosh, friendship and a presentation on Tupperware that is sure to make homemaker tasks easier.

Enter the incomparable Kay Sedia (pronounced k-sa-de-ya (like the food)) — self-described Chola and International beauty queen from Tijuana who redefines “Tupperware Lady” to one of self-effacing humor spiced with her bold and unapologetic colloquial East LAisms. The house parties become “fiestas” where Ms. Sedia — dressed in a colorful drag outfit, full makeup, and really big hair — puts on a comedy-infused product orientation.

On a recent Fiesta in Alhambra, she intertwined her kitchen tips using Tupperware tools to prepare school lunch for her six-year-old son and dinner for her family, “Ju know mija, I’ve been selling Tupperware for 22 years and had to take a break during COVID,” she explains. “I soo happy for my past hostesses inviting me to do a Tupperware Fiesta for their friends. I can do juan for ju too, if ju want the free hostess gifts, or for fundraisers.” she added.
