It’s not much of a flowering bush to the human eye (is it?) but on the first day of really warm weather (80F) what a pot of gold it is to the bees of La Cañada.

I’ve been sitting here answering emails for an hour and there has scarcely been a moment when a bee has not swept into the flowers, gobbled a dainty morsel and swept out again. There’s one there now although I can’t see it in the photo.
How clever of them to have found their favorite food in an area dominated by evergreens. Then they take the pollen they’ve collected from us to a neighbor’s flowers to help those grow too and replenish the supply chain.
I’m tempted to apologize to them for eating honey for breakfast but, after all, I say to myself, we did provide you with a first-class meal.
