Long after the last samples were served and the shuttle buses stopped running, the Taste of South Pasadena continues to leave an impression on those who attended the citywide food celebration on May 19.

The evening began with eager crowds lining up at will call to collect wristbands before setting out on a walkable culinary tour that showcased more than 20 local businesses. What followed was three hours of food, drinks, live music, and neighborhood discovery that transformed South Pasadena into one large outdoor tasting room.
Under warm spring weather, attendees explored participating locations throughout the city while local musicians provided a soundtrack for the festivities. Families, couples, groups of friends, children, and even pets joined the crowds, creating an atmosphere that felt more like a community gathering than a traditional food festival.
While popular favorites attracted steady lines, the event also introduced many attendees to restaurants they may have otherwise overlooked.
One of the night’s biggest surprises came from Dumpling Tops, where juicy pork dumplings and crispy egg rolls quickly became crowd favorites. For many attendees, the restaurant challenged the notion that exceptional Chinese comfort food can only be found in nearby Monterey Park and other well-known dining hubs.
Cafe X2O earned recognition for Best Presentation with its visually striking beef and chicken shawarma, rolled and served in a style resembling crepes. The creative presentation stood out among dozens of offerings and became one of the evening’s most talked-about dishes.
Meanwhile, Visionarium Live Italian consistently drew some of the longest lines of the event thanks to its popular gelato selections. Tomato Pie Pizza Joint also attracted a loyal following throughout the evening, with many guests praising its fresh pizza, particularly a flavorful margherita-style slice.
The beverage options reflected the event’s variety, offering everything from tequila cocktails and wine to sake-based drinks. Among the standout pours was SOKE – Sake Reinvented, which proved popular for its light, smooth, and approachable flavor.
To help guests navigate the route, shuttle buses operated between four stops, allowing attendees to comfortably move between participating locations and maximize the number of businesses they could visit.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the evening was the growing diversity of South Pasadena’s food scene. The range of international cuisines surprised many attendees and highlighted how the city is evolving into a destination for culinary exploration within the San Gabriel Valley.
Almost a month later, the Taste of South Pasadena’s lasting impact may not be the individual dishes or drinks, but the new discoveries it inspired. For many attendees, the event served as a reminder that some of the area’s most interesting dining experiences can be found just around the corner, waiting to be revisited long after the festival ends.
