This is the sixth piece in a series to highlight real life issues for renters in Pasadena. This series is presented in association with Pasadena Tenants Union.

My story about Pasadena’s Affordable Housing Problem.

I am a long-time resident of Pasadena. Over the years, I have noticed that the cost of rent has increased, but the quality of care, maintenance and improvements has not changed. For example, I live in an apartment building that does not have any security, so traffic is free to roam in and out both day and night. Also, during the hot seasons the ground is dry and the infestation enters the dwelling. This could be limited if the owner would care for the property as if he were living there.

People are disappointed with some landlords because they don’t keep up their end of the agreement or don’t enforce it the same way with all tenants. The main reason is that landlords don’t live in the area where they can quickly take care of their business or, if they like being realtors, are only interested in buying and selling to make a profit.

I believe if realtors were community members and were serious about having a community that would thrive and flourish with more residents, people would not leave and homelessness would decrease.

“I Have Lived in Pasadena for 35 Years.”

      By JWG

I am a retired senior citizen who has been living in Pasadena for 35 years. I am a renter/tenant and living on a fixed income. Therefore, I feel especially vulnerable regarding potential increases in my rent. And I don’t know if I will be able to handle any rent increases.

I fear becoming homeless and living/dying on the streets.

As a renter, I have never felt so insecure about my housing. Prior to 2009, I thought I did everything right. I saved and planned for my retirement.

Then life turned upside down after the 2009 economic crash. I not only lost my retirement and my career due to the economy, but also my health due to a stroke. I was forced to sell my home, which was my pride.

As a renter, I have never felt so insecure about my housing.

We need statewide rent control and until we get it tenants must resist rent increases above the consumer price index and resist all displacement. Get active!
