On December 31, 2023, at approximately 3:25 pm, San Gabriel Fire Department Rescue Ambulance #51 was on a call for service in the 700 block of Sunset Avenue.

An adult male transient in his late 40’s got into the driver’s seat of the fire ambulance and drove off. No other occupants were in the ambulance when it was stolen.
San Gabriel police officers were notified. Officers located the ambulance and a pursuit ensued. The suspect collided with numerous vehicles while evading police officers. The pursuit ended in the 2800 block of Canterbury Road in San Marino and the suspect was taken into custody for Grand Theft Auto and Felony Evading.
The suspect, who has an extensive criminal history, sustained non-life threatening injuries during the pursuit and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. As a result of the stolen truck colliding into numerous motorists, two sustained minor injuries and were released on scene, three others sustained minor injuries and were transported to two separate hospitals. No police officers or fire personnel were injured in the incident.
The damage to the fire ambulance was significant and it will be taken out of service. It has been replaced with a backup unit.
