After months of in-depth research, careful writing, and countless hours of editing, South Pasadena High School (SPHS) students showcased their talents at two major academic events: the History Day LA competition at San Gabriel High School on March 1, 2025, and the National History Day California Championship at Sacramento State University from May 2–4, 2025.

This year’s theme, “Rights & Responsibilities in History,” challenged students to explore historical topics through critical analysis and original scholarship.
Freshman Luke Kwak made an impressive mark at the state level with his historical paper titled “Left Behind by the Greatest Generation: How the GI Bill Widened the Racial Gap in America.” His work earned 4th place in the state and received the prestigious Clio Award, which honors exceptional student papers. In recognition of his achievement, Luke’s paper will be published in an upcoming issue of Clio, Sacramento State University’s award-winning student history journal.
In the documentary category, juniors Julian Ovalle, Youhan Liu, and Ethan Kwak represented SPHS with compelling visual storytelling. Ethan Kwak’s documentary received recognition as a regional runner-up, reflecting the high caliber of work produced by the team.
SPHS Social Science teacher Oliver Valcorza played an instrumental role in guiding and mentoring the students through the rigorous History Day process. His dedication and leadership were essential in helping students translate their academic curiosity into award-winning projects.
