The all-volunteer effort by citizens of South Pasadena was rewarded with this year’s “Founder Award” in recognition of the outstanding float they built.
By Jerry Friedman
The large tent has been cleared and the tools and tables have been put away to make room for the returning behemoth. The South Pasadena Tournament of Roses float building effort was headed by Brant Dunlap, who has decades of experience under his belt. He was clearly overjoyed with the results of his team and expressed confidence that in two weeks the float would be reduced back to the basic rolling chassis.
There were still a small amount of flowers being given away at the build site. Brant mentioned that at the completion of the build, some of the volunteers delivered bouquets of flowers to local hospitals. Flowers returning on the float will be available free to the public on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2022. When I asked about their plan for the organic material, one volunteer stated the large roll-on dumpster they had was mostly organic materials, adding they thought the disposal company might process it.
Everyone is encouraged to come by next Saturday and get a souvenir flower.

It really was a b-e-a-t-i-f-u-l float.
Saw this being constructed when I was working the polls next door in September.
