South Pasadena Councilwoman, and former mayor, Marina Khubesrian, who also happens to be a physician, sent a letter to the community.

Some of you have reached out with concerns about possible supply shortages at grocery stores and wondering if there should be some action taken by local jurisdictions to moderate supply availability.

Stores are taking action

After a weekend of heavy shopping activity, many stores are taking action on their own:

• Closing for longer periods of time to allow cleaning and restocking and reduce the chaos.
• Limiting the number of items for popular things like milk and eggs, ie. no more than two per shopper.
• And phasing the addition of stock during the day so things like toilet paper don’t get bought up all at once.

It’s important for people to remember that the supply chains are still working. It’s not like an earthquake where the TP factory fell down and can’t make any more. All the products are still being made and delivered at an accelerated pace. There was a huge rush this weekend because all the closures and cancellations were just announced. It should settle down as people get their first round of groceries, supplies and begin to adjust to the situation.

Delivery is relatively safe

Additionally, delivery from grocery stores and restaurants is relatively safe. COVID-19 is not a food-borne illness. The small interaction with the delivery guy is not enough to create significant exposure. Better yet, just have them leave your items on the porch and pay in advance with a card. In fact, it would go a long way to support our local restaurants by ordering in.
Now is a good time to indulge in your favorite comfort food, in moderation of course.

Good hygiene

Wash your hands with soap thoroughly and often. Clean surfaces that are touched often each day.
