Mr. Tim Murphy grew up 2 blocks away from the Colorado Street Bridge.

      By Brian Rodriguez

Few years ago, Mr. Murphy traveled to Omaha Nebraska to help clean out the house of Cornelius Jansen Claasen, a deceased relative.

In the process of cleaning the home, Mr. Murphy came across a photograph of Colorado Street Bridge. Although Mr. Claasen had lived in the Midwest, his family had spent their winters at the Hotel Green in Pasadena.

On January 19, 1949, and during a very unusual winter in the City of Roses, his family snapped the photo above of the famous bridge covered in snow.

      1949

That year was exceptional, according to the historical weather records at Mount Wilson:

The coldest day of 1949 was January 4, with a low temperature of 10°F.

A cold winter storm system coming from Alaska caused few outages in the evening (South Pasadena and by Eaten Canyon) and capped the mountains with a dust of white making for a beautiful view for early risers in the Greater Pasadena area.
