The City of Sierra Madre has announced the grand reopening of the Sierra Madre Public Library at its longtime location, 440 W. Sierra Madre Boulevard, following a significant renovation and expansion project designed to enhance library services for generations to come.

      By News Desk

After nearly two and a half years of construction and a four-month closure to complete the final phase of improvements, the library is set to welcome the community back to a revitalized facility that preserves the building’s mid-century heritage while introducing modern amenities, expanded programming opportunities, and improved accessibility.

To mark the occasion, the City will host a Grand Reopening, Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, and Summer Reading Kickoff on Saturday, June 6, 2026, beginning at 10:00 am.

The celebration will feature remarks from local and state dignitaries, followed by an official ribbon-cutting ceremony and a Lion Dance performance presented by the San Gabriel Valley Chinese Cultural Association. Activities throughout the day will include a community party, a special appearance by Thor’s Reptiles to launch the library’s “Sierra Madre Super Summer” programming, live performances from Sierra Madre Music, a community puzzle competition, and a variety of family-friendly activities.

The renovated library includes more than 5,000 additional square feet of space and offers a range of new amenities across two floors. New features include a dedicated Local History Room, a 100-person Community Room, a Teen Room, an outdoor Reading Balcony, a Makerspace Area, a newly constructed parking lot, expanded ADA accessibility improvements, and extensive seismic retrofitting and infrastructure upgrades.

The approximately $12 million project was funded through a combination of federal, state, and City resources, along with support from local nonprofit organizations and community partners.

New furniture, fixtures, and equipment have helped complete the transformation, bringing updated shelving, modern technology, and comfortable gathering spaces to the facility while maintaining its mid-century modern aesthetic. Visitors will find new seating areas, a fireplace lounge, modern furnishings, and redesigned public spaces throughout the building.

The City recognized the contributions of the Friends of the Sierra Madre Library and the Sierra Madre Library Foundation for their efforts in helping furnish and enhance the library. Additional support was provided by organizations including the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation, Pasadena Community Foundation, Sierra Madre Community Foundation, Sierra Madre Rotary Club, Sierra Madre Civic Club, Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society, and other community partners.

City officials noted that some final installations and enhancements will continue throughout the summer due to the scale and complexity of the project. To accommodate ongoing work, the library will remain closed one additional day each week. During June and July, the facility will be closed on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

Residents are encouraged to visit the newly renovated library during the reopening celebration and experience the transformation of one of Sierra Madre’s most treasured community institutions.
