– Update: Evacuation Orders Issued for Portions of Sierra Madre
Sierra Madre canyon residents are being urged to prepare for possible evacuations due to the approaching storm.
By News Desk
The City of Sierra Madre has issued an important alert for certain areas, advising residents to download the Genasys Protect app to check their evacuation status. Evacuation orders will be issued by zones, and residents will receive updates through the Genasys Protect app, as well as Nixle Alerts. (To sign up for Nixle Alerts, text 888777).
Residents are advised to plan for a potential evacuation and ensure they have important documents, medications, and an emergency “go bag” ready in case they need to leave on short notice. It’s also critical to check on neighbors and confirm that they have a plan in place should an evacuation be required.
Sierra Madre authorities are reminding residents that Fire, Police, and Public Works personnel will not enter areas affected by active mud and debris flows. If evacuation orders are given, and residents choose to remain in their homes, they will need to shelter in place until the area is deemed safe for City personnel to enter.
In anticipation of Thursday’s storm, the City has also implemented parking restrictions in the canyon residential areas. No parking will be allowed starting 9:00 am Thursday, February 13, 2025, until 9:00 am Sunday, February 16, 2025. Additionally, Athens Services will not be collecting trash in the canyon residential areas on Thursday. Residents are asked not to place trash bins outside, as they may be swept away by mud and debris flows, obstructing streets further.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow all official advisories as the storm approaches.
