After an extensive recruitment process to find the next Police Chief for the Sierra Madre Police Department, the City has made an offer to current Sierra Madre Police Lieutenant Gustavo Barrientos to serve as the next Chief of Police. The offer is contingent on the completion of a full-background assessment.

Mr. Barrientos has worked in law enforcement for over 27 years, serving with the Los Angeles Police Department in various ranks since 1995. In Sierra Madre Police Department he served first as a Lieutenant and currently as Interim Captain. Mr. Barrientos has experience working in incident- command posts, managing various local and regional task forces, community policing, and officer training.
City Manager Jose Reynoso said:
I am thrilled to announce Lt. Barrientos as our new Chief of Police. Gus brings a wealth of experience and leadership with a commitment to continuing to develop our officers and a community-based approach to policing.
Current President of the Sierra Madre Police Association Kyle Bailey said “The men and women of the Sierra Madre Police Department are excited with the recent announcement of Lt. Gus Barrientos as our new Police Chief. Chief Barrientos has already established himself as a caring and vested member of our organization and this community. The City of Sierra Madre and the Police Department are in good hands.”
Of the opportunity, Lt. Barrientos said:
It is an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens and business owners in Sierra Madre, I look forward to immersing myself further into the City and creating an environment that is conducive and inclusive within the Police Department. My priorities are bridging the gap in community policing, professional development, focusing on community responsiveness, and providing a high-level of customer service.
Mr. Barrientos holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Cal-State Northridge. He is married to his junior high-school sweetheart, Yesenia. They have one son.
