State Sen. Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) issued a statement mourning the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Houston, Texas, resident who was fatally shot during an encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents Tuesday.

Pérez said Araujo was a father, businessman and longtime Houston resident who was driving workers to a construction site when he was confronted by ICE agents and killed. She described him as a family man with no criminal record who was working to support his family and help his sons attend college.
“This is the American dream personified,” Pérez said in her statement.
Pérez called for a full, independent and transparent investigation into Araujo’s death, including the release of his body to his family and the preservation of all evidence related to the shooting. She also called for charges against any ICE agents involved if wrongdoing is found.
The senator raised concerns about reports from the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) that the Department of Homeland Security is attempting to deport eyewitnesses to the shooting, saying such actions could undermine public trust in the investigation.
“Their actions call into question the integrity of the investigative process and fuel public mistrust,” Pérez said.
Pérez also referenced reports of large-scale immigrant detentions, saying the reported figures should concern the public.
She offered condolences to Araujo’s family, saying he should still be alive with his loved ones and contributing to his community.
