Sen. Pérez Applauds Supreme Court Decision Upholding Birthright Citizenship

Sen. Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) praised the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to uphold birthright citizenship, calling the ruling a reaffirmation of the protections guaranteed under the Fourteenth Amendment.

In a statement, Pérez said the court “correctly settled this divisive question” by affirming that children born in the United States to parents who are unlawfully or temporarily present in the country are U.S. citizens at birth.

Pérez said the decision ensures that the citizenship of those children “should never be trivialized for political gain.” She also criticized efforts by the Trump administration to end birthright citizenship, comparing them to “people who once benefited from that right trying to shut the door behind them so no one else can benefit from it.”

Calling the ruling “a victory for our diverse nation,” Pérez expressed hope that the decision would help bring people together as the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday.
