Second Rabid Bat Reported in Pasadena This Year

The Pasadena Public Health Department (PPHD) has received a report of a second bat infected with rabies this year.

The bat was found near the baseball field at Brenner Park at approximately 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026. No human rabies cases have been reported, and the overall risk to the public remains low.

PPHD is urging residents to avoid contact with bats and report any injured, ill or dead bats to local animal control or public health authorities.

“Bats can carry rabies and should never be handled,” said Manuel Carmona, director of public health. “Community members should avoid contact with and immediately report injured, ill or dead bats.”

Residents should never handle bats with their bare hands. If a dead or dying bat is found on the ground, contact Pasadena Humane at (626) 792-7151 for collection.

“Any contact between humans or pets and a rabid bat is a very serious health concern,” said Dr. Parveen Kaur, health officer. “Rabies is a life-threatening disease that requires timely preventive medical treatment.”

Kaur said rabies can be transmitted through a bite or scratch from an infected animal. Anyone whose skin comes into contact with a bat should immediately wash the area with soap and water and seek medical care. Animal bites should be discussed with a medical provider as soon as possible. If a pet has been exposed, contact an emergency veterinarian.
